Medals of Valor - 03/25/13

On July 13, 2012, at approximately 7:30 in the morning, emergency units were dispatched to a garden-style apartment reported to be on fire at 14005 Castle Boulevard in Burtonsville.

Police Sergeant Daniel Hendrick arrived within 20 seconds of the dispatch. He parked his car and immediately observed the fire and a ladder going up to the 3rd floor. A man in a t-shirt and shorts (later identified as Master Fire Fighter Steven Wiseman) was attempting to rescue a woman. Sergeant Hendrick went up the ladder to assist. Fire Fighter Wiseman handed Hendrick the female that he rescued from the balcony. Hendrick brought her down the ladder to safety. Master Fire Fighter Wiseman came down the ladder with the womans dog. Master Fire Fighter Wiseman then extended the free standing ladder up to the 4th floor balcony. Wiseman climbed onto the 4th floor balcony and handed Sergeant Hendrick a total of six people to bring down the ladder.

During this time, multiple agencies responded and assisted by holding the ladder while Wiseman and Hendrick were up near the balconies. On one of the trips down the ladder, an officer told Hendrick that the smoke was so thick that it was hard to see the balconies.

Master Fire Fighter Christopher Reilly and Master Fire Fighter Michael Ryman searched the smoke-filled apartments without benefit of a hose line. Officers Roslyn Mills, Paul Borja and Stanley Barsch arrived shortly thereafter and aided with rescuing victims to safety. They removed ladders from the truck and assisted Master Fire Fighter Wiseman with rescuing trapped victims from units engulfed by flames. Before additional fire apparatus could arrive, the fire rapidly grew in intensity.

For demonstrating zeal by conducting a search and rescue of victims during an emergency situation without benefit of a hose line, the Chamber of Commerce presented the Bronze Medal of Valor to Master Fire Fighter Christopher Reilly and BVFD Master Firefighter Michael Ryman.

For taking risks above and beyond the call of duty by rescuing victims of a raging 3-alarm fire while being untrained as a fire fighter, the Chamber of Commerce presented the Silver Medal of Valor to Sergeant Daniel Hendrick.

For bravely being severely exposed to fire and smoke without protection or gear to rescue multiple trapped residents from balconies of a rapidly advancing apartment fire, the Chamber of Commerce presented the Silver Medal of Valor to Master Fire Fighter Steven Wiseman.

BVFD Saddened By The Loss Of Tom Logan - 02/26/13

The Burtonsville Volunteer Fire Department is greatly saddened to announce the death of distinguished Life Member, Sgt. Tom Logan.

Please hold his wife Carla, daughter Lindsay and son Joey in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.

Tommy Logan was 22 years old, when he joined the Burtonsville Volunteer Fire Department on October 9th, 1967. He sought out training opportunities, worked hard, and advanced to the rank of Assistant Fire Chief by March of 1971. He was well known in the Community and well respected by his peers.

In 1972, the BVFD hired Tommy as one of our own career Firefighters. He was one of the three officers that provided daily shift management for the station. He also had a passion for fire prevention and community service. He won national recognition for the BVFD, for his comprehensive fire prevention programs. He taught CPR and babysitting classes that both educated our Community and built life long relationships. He was fiercely loyal to his men and he always put their safety and welfare above all else. For medical reasons, he was forced to retire in July of 1987.

Tommy continued to serve the BVFD from 1987 until his death, as a loyal Associate Member. During the 1990s, Tommy served seven terms on our Board of Directors and served as the Board Secretary as well as the Delegate and Alternate to the Montgomery County Volunteer Fire Rescue Association. He actively served on the Fire Prevention Committee, Banquet Committee, Historical Preservation Committee and was well known as our FD Tags Coordinator.

On April 11, 1988, Life Membership was bestowed upon Tommy.

Throughout his tenure, Tommy was always a steadfast supporter of the BVFD. He served as an advisor, giving thoughtful guidance to our President. He closely monitored the ebb and flow of our Membership each decade, from the late 60s through 2013. He didnt need to be in the forefront, to demonstrate his care and concern for the continued life of this Department. For over 45 years, Tommy quietly modeled what it meant to be a real fireman, as well as a true friend, an attentive husband, and dedicated father.
