The BVFD responds to three alarm fire

Tue. Aug. 10th, Takoma Park, MD. Burtonsville Vol. Fire Dept. Responds to a three-alarm garden apartment fire. Fire eventually spread across three apartment buildings.

Early Tuesday morning, Montgomery County 911 received a call for smoke in the building, in the 9000 block of Piney Branch Road, at 0818 hours. The initial units to arrive on the scene reported from Silver Spring and Takoma Fire Departments. Upon arrival units find that they already have more than one apartment on fire. By 0830, the incident commander called for a second alarm.

Investigators on the scene reportedly found that the fire had been started by a malfunctioning air conditioner unit on the first floor. The fire quickly spread to the third story apartment and through the roof. The fire caused more than one Million dollars in damage, in three buildings and at least eight apartments.

The fire was extinguished in less than 40 minutes. More than 120 emergency personnel responded to the scene coming on more than 20 fire apparatus. Three fire fighters and one civilian received minor burns, however were treated and released from the Burn Unit at Washington Hospital Center.

The firefighters continued on a busy day, as they responded on another report of fire at the Washington Adventist Hospital. The hospital fire was minor in nature and did not require the fire department for extinguishment, only light smoke removal.
