04/26/98 Sunday morning just before 7 A.M. Prince Georges County Fire Dispatch a box alarm for 6011 Ammendale Road. Truck 15 from Burtonsville Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched on the Second alarm just a few minutes later. Soon after Engine 151 was dispatched on the third alarm. Fire officials from the BVFD stated that they could see a large smoke column in the sky before they even left the firehouse. The monastery built in the 1880's and vacant since the 1960's served as an educational facility of the Christian Brothers, a Roman Catholic order that also operates a multitude of other schools and universities nation wide. Using several thousand feet of hose and having to shut down US Rte. 1 to utilize the hydrants, the fire took almost two hours to extinguish.
